🥋 Dojo FAQ

Getting Started
Do I need experience to start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Not at all. We welcome complete beginners as well as experienced practitioners. Our structured curriculum ensures everyone progresses at their own pace.
Do I need to be fit or strong to start?
No. Jiu-Jitsu is for everyone regardless of age, gender, or fitness level. You’ll naturally build strength, mobility, and endurance as you train.
What should I wear to my first class?
If you don’t yet own a gi (uniform), just wear comfortable athletic clothing. We also provide rental gis and laundry services if needed.
What is the structure of a typical class?
Most classes begin with a short warm-up to prepare the body, followed by technique instruction and drilling. After that, we move into positional sparring to practice specific situations in a controlled way. Full sparring (rolling) usually takes place after class or during open mat sessions. This progression ensures safe, effective learning for all levels.
Programs & Training
Do you offer classes for kids and women?
Yes. We have dedicated kids’ programs as well as women’s classes focused on self-defence, fitness, and empowerment.
What language are classes conducted in?
Classes are bilingual. Instruction is primarily in English, as our coaches are international, with Japanese support provided by local staff to ensure everyone can follow comfortably.
How do I progress to a higher belt level? Do I need to compete?
Belt promotions are based on class attendance, consistent effort, and a clear understanding of our belt curriculum. Students are expected to demonstrate both technical knowledge and safe application of skills in training.

Competition is optional and never required for promotion. However, for students interested in competing, we provide additional support including tailored training, specific techniques, and strategy to help prepare for tournaments.
Is it safe to spar?
Yes. Sparring is encouraged, but always in the safest possible way. Our dojo does not tolerate anyone who disregards the safety of others. We emphasize control, respect, and technique over brute strength. Because injuries are one of the main reasons students quit, we place great importance on safe, progressive sparring that suits each student’s level.
What are the cleanliness rules?
Students must train in a clean gi or rashguard at all times. Good hygiene is essential: uniforms should be fresh, nails trimmed, and personal cleanliness maintained. Please avoid strong body odor, dirty gear, or bad breath. Respect for your partners means arriving fresh, clean, and ready to train.
Membership & Facilities
Do you accept visitors or drop-ins?
Yes. We welcome visiting practitioners. A visitor pass can be arranged in advance or at the dojo.
Do you have lockers, showers, and laundry?
Yes. We provide private lockers, showers, and gi/towel laundry services for members who want added convenience.
How do I sign up?

Our Dojo
What makes your dojo different?
We are the first Pedro Sauer Association school in Japan, offering world-class instruction, a safe environment, and a welcoming international culture.
What is the background and legacy of your dojo?
Our dojo was built by the same team who established GJJ Singapore as one of the most successful martial arts schools in Asia. Over the years, we have guided students from white to black belt — men and women, boys and girls, ranging in age from 4 to 70.

Despite our strong safety record, our students have also achieved incredible results in the competition scene. We never compel students to compete, but many choose to, and we fully support them with preparation, techniques, and strategy.

We are closely affiliated with schools across Australia, the USA, and Europe, ensuring a constant stream of high-level guest teachers. You will regularly meet world-class practitioners on our mats, making training here both safe and inspiring.
